What you see here is what we're calling The Modular UMPC. It looks pretty good sitting all by itself, nice, small stylish, but the real power behind this UMPC is that a keyboard can snap onto it, or it can slide into a larger keyboard and display for a full-blown computing experience. This is a UMPC than can be added onto and expanded to satisfy your usage paradigm.

The Modular has a sleek, glossy look that exudes a sense of power and elegance. Its rounded front just screams out to be handled. Big front-mounted buttons beg to be pushed, while the touch-screen takes up the entire front facade.

Snap on the included small-form factor keyboard for easy typing on the run. The qwerty keyboard provides a familiar input method when you've got no time for hand-writing.

It's just the right size for your lap, tray table, or countertop but without the bulkiness of a clam-shaped laptop. The Modular can be placed on conference tables and act as a speakerphone for conference calls or hooked up to a projector to run powerpoint presentations or show high-definition videos.

However, it doesn't stop there. The unique form factor of The Modular allows it to slide into the back of a full-sized keyboard and large LCD display, providing full-sized computing when you are back at your desk.

The convenience of this revolutionary modular design is exemplified in this configuration. A broad range of wired peripherals can be attached to this base station including DVD-ROM drives or additional hard-drives. When you've finished your work, simply remove The Modular pop it into your bag and you've got all your important information with you.

The Modular combines the familiar feel of the desktop with the ultimate in portability. You don't have to fret anymore about lugging your 19" notebook back home to get a little more work done. It truly gives you the freedom to get real work done, no matter where you go.

Ubiquitous computing, The Modular allows your computer to take whatever shape you need it to.

Up next is a UMPC for the home. Featuring home-security and media center controls, this next UMPC is shaping up to be the one device that can manage every aspect of your home in the palm of your hand. Stay tuned...

Bjorn, are you familiar with the education/gaming UMPC that Microoft is working on? I understand it uses an active digitizer to ensure accuracy. I am curious as to when it will hit the market.

I don't know much about that project, it would probably be better to ask Microsoft about it. I'll ask them when I'm at CES next week.
