Packard Bell EasyNote XS Gallery

The Packard Bell EasyNote XS is the first ultra mobile device to be based on the VIA NanoBook Reference Design. Early reports indicate an August 2007 launch in Europe with a price point around 599. The EasyNote XS has eschewed the modular design of the NanoBook and opted instead for a webcam mounted beside the 7" screen. The EasyNote XS is expected to be the first UMPC to be adopted by mainstream audiences.

UMPCs have not gained broad consumer acceptance for a few reasons: the touchscreen-only interface required users to learn a new input method, many UMPCs had a battery life of only 2 hours, and most consumers expected smaller devices to be far cheaper than their much larger and heavier counterparts. Packard Bell has addressed all three of these issues by choosing a design that features a full-size keyboard, utilizes the VIA Ultra Mobility Platform to increase battery life up to 5 hours, and manages to deliver everything at a much more consumer-friendly price of 599.

When the Packard Bell EasyNote XS hits shelves, many consumers will finally be able to feel good about getting a little notebook just to check their e-mail, get a little extra work done, and keep in touch with their friends on the road. It looks like the days of the $2000+ ultra portable notebook are numbered.

Ultra mobile device prices are dropping

Devices like this mobile computer are unlike many inexpensive electronics in that most highly advanced consumer electronic items come at a high cost until the technology is perfected enough to discount it. Until then, stick to wholesale electronic products like desktop computers.

I am looking forward to buying one, as it will be great for travelling and being able to transfer photos and keep a travel log. :p :p :p :p :p :p :p :p

If you want just transfer photos and keep a travel log look at http://www.mobilewhack.com/-asus-eeepc-701/ .
It costs 200$ but much has less power than EasyNote XS.

I like the look of this but wish they'd kept closer to the reference design. I've no interest in webcams so having one as standard isn't a selling point for me.

Anyone want to give any input how they think this will compare/compete to the HTC Advantage 7501 or HTC shift?

The Easynote XS is an laptop where you can put a normal operating system on, an HTC is a kind of PDA which will have windows mobile on it, windows mobile is less flexible & much more irritating as a desktop operating system.

This particular model will not be available in the US because Packard Bell exited the US market about a decade ago.

Everex is the OEM that will be selling Nanobooks for the US market. Follow the Everex CE260 and 261 at Engadget: http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/16/everexs-ce260-ce261-tracking-for-q1-release/

The HTC Shift, of course, runs Windows Vista normally, and CE in sleep-mode. It also costs much much more than this.

Same Laptop as the Everex Cloud Book but for $200.00 more because it has WindowsXP.
The Everex Cloud Book has Linux on it with a Office suite on it for $399.00.
Same Laptop, just different names.
