The sergeant suddenly lunged, caught me by the scruff and slammed me down into the freezing mud. "Silence!" he hissed, the word escaping his mouth in a long puff of chilled white vapor. His eyes were transfixed on a gleaming object in the tree line. My eyes followed his.
"You see that, grunt?" the sergeant growled, "those two slots between the earphone muzzle and the air intake?"
"Those two USB ports may look small to the untrained eye, but those of us who've survived the chaos of the Legacy Wars know exactly how efficient those little bastards can be. On their own, those ports are vicious little equalizers, capable of connecting almost any device under the sun - and they can even use the power supply of that NanoBook to power low-consumption devices ... and recharge cell phones! But to see TWO of them together, working in unison as part of such an efficient little fighting machine ... it makes my blood curdle."
The sergeant let out a low, ominous whistle and leaned back, shaking his head...

... "The worst part is ... as of June 14, 2007, even new cell phones applying for license in China are required to adopt the USB port as a power port. Anyone who hasn't got USB yet is going to be caught with his pants down in the worst kind of way," said the sergeant as he instinctively rested his fingers on his belt for a moment, as if to reassure himself of something.
"In the beginning they just connected PCs to keyboards and mice ... now it's PDAs, gamepads, joysticks, scanners, cameras, printers, flash drives, webcams and even external drives. You name it, the USB port will connect it - and even power it and recharge it!"
"It all makes me wonder what terrifying USB peripherals are being rolled out at this very moment ..."
The sergeant gave a visible shiver as he turned his head back to stare over the moonlit craters of no man's land. "There’s a cold wind a blowin' me lad ... mark my words, these USB devices are taking over."
