Alright, so yesterday I shared a model e2 review with you and today I'm going to do it again. This time Chippy, from UMPCPortal, gives his first impressions on the OQO model e2. Overall he finds the OQO model e2 to be a very solid machine with just a few minor quibbles. Here's the quote that I was happy to see:
Vista Ultimate on the 1.6Ghz processor and 1GB of RAM works smoothly out of the box with no optimisations which is nice to see.
However, there was one quibble that I feel like I have to comment on, and that was about the fan noise. I have heard from a few people (including Chippy) that they find the fan to be incredibly loud and on all the time and I have to wonder what they've done to their OQO.
I have heard the fan once on my model 02 and that was when I turned the fan configuration to the "Cooler" setting to see if it was really all that loud. And yes, it was rather loud when I forced the fan to turn on. However, in all my time with my 02 I haven't had the fan kick in beyond it's lowest setting, even when I'm watching movies on an HDTV, doing very heavy web-browsing sessions with meebo and youtube going full blast, and playing games (both flash based and 3D). I've even accidently left my OQO on when I stuffed it into my messenger bag and the fan never cranked up (the unit was quite warm when I took it out of the bag however).
I would really recommend everyone who has experienced fan noise problems to go into the fan settings and adjust it towards "quieter", because it sounds like there's a configuration problem. I know their utility has the Fan Control settings under the "Performance" tab, but it really does not affect performance at all. It simply adjusts the thresholds for when and how strong the fan kicks in.

Hi.
As a reference point, which model do you have and what OS is it running?
This could be significant because I can't get my 1.6Ghz/Vista model to keep quiet!

I'm running an OQO model 02 "Best" model, 1.5GHz, 1GB RAM, 60GB HDD, Windows XP, with power settings set on Portable/Laptop. Fan Control is set to default right smack in the middle.

I've got the original 'Best' model, and the fan gets VERY loud. I always keep the fan setting on 'quiet' but that does not help at all. Is there a large variance in fans between units? Could some units have heating problems?

I have fan settings almost all the way over to the right but its still loud. I guess the 1.6 + Vista combo really doesnt help. ots of mem and hdd activity.
Thanks for the feedback.

I'm really curious about this subject, what are you guys doing with your devices? Do you have a bunch of software running? I will perform some experiments with mine to see what kind of threshold it takes to get the fan to kick in.

Has anyone tried using voice commands with a UMPC?
