I just ran across this video from Kevin Tofel showing off the rather poor video recording on the ASUS eeePC. Watching the video, you can barely hear Kevin over the fan noise and the video seems to be a bit too much like a slideshow to me. With the fan running like that I wonder if it's having trouble keeping the processor cool enough while it struggles to record the video. I like how Kevin calls the experience "less than optimal"
On a related note, Chippy just got his EasyNote XS and I'm interested in seeing him run the same video recording test on that UMPC. Anyone want to place any bets on whether I'll have to eat my hat after seeing the results?

Hi Bjorn, Kevin Tofel here. Yup, the video recording wasn't what I'm used to on a Windows or Mac platform, but I think it's too early to call on if it's an issue with the hardware or the software. Since there's a relatively solid Intel chipset on-board, I suspect it's either the software or the specifications around the meager .3 MP camera. I don't think having a VIA CPU in place of the Intel would have any affect whatsoever...
As far as the fan and low recording noise, it could be that I had the mic level set too low; I'll have to check and\or try another recording. The fan doesn't run nearly that often; far less than most other comparable devices. I've heard the fan on much higher priced portable units like the OQO, Q1 Vye, and others... the fan on the Eee is much quieter. Just wanted to clarify because you've drawn and shared a conclusion that isn't quite right there. Video recording wasn't great for sure, but the low mic and fan aren't the issues that you think from what I can see.
Best,
kct

The mic problem is because the mic on the eeepc is on the bottom of the laptop, not ideal, and yes the quality from 0.3mp is going to be poor, the fan on mine is very very quite, compared to my compaq notebook is silent.
It does have external mic input if you really are that bothered by the sound quality

What's the OS like? Is it a full enough implementation of XandrOS to be able to install additional Debian packages?
