Gigabyte M704 UMPC

This vaguely familiar UMPC was spotted out in the wild sporting a much improved look. It's got a VIA C7-M CPU and rocking a 1024x600 display. This higher res display is what most UMPC enthusiasts have been clamoring for and Gigabyte has proven that they are listening. This is yet another example of UMPC manufacturers working hard to get their designs right. A few weeks ago we saw the Wibrain B1 sporting a new look and now Gigabyte is following up their U60 with this newly designed M704. These are some exciting times to be in the UMPC market.

While they got the display right (and hopefully the overall quality some reviewers complained about) they mad / did not correct one - I believe fatal - mistake. :roll
According to the specs I have seen (translated from the chinese Gigabyte website), the M704 still has only 768MB of RAM - and that's the max, no addition possible. As it also seems to come with Vista - which I believe is the way to go for a 2008 model - this is a gruelsome limitation.

Well, let's see what the specs will be when the M704 really hits the market

UMPC manufacturers are slowly realizing pen input will not sell to the mass population. What I think is still missing is creating form factors that enable them to be pocket size yet still offer a touch type keyboard and a 4-5" screen. I think the only new UMPC thinking out of the box yet more aligned to mainstream is the Samsung SPH P9200
