Today Santa chimes in from his workshop and he waxes poetic about UMDs, what Chippy's not getting for Christmas and asks the UMPC enthusiasts what UMD they would buy for a friend or family member for Christmas and why?

Why did you have to convince VIA to give you an OQO if you make the OQOs? Are you the real Santa?

Yes but Sascha... you are one of the NUTS!... what UMPC would you get for a non-enthusiast... and why?

thats pretty simple, the non enthusiast should be a business person in my opinion.. a very mobile one...
and then this umpc device has to compete against all these smartphone and blackberries (im a still loving my nokia communicator).
I see a kinda deadend for this at the moment.
How can i convince a customer, how can i create a demand for something that is so limited in its mobility due to the lack of battery life and the lack of a real concept?

You can't only shrink a device and think this is the new mobile computer when the operating system on top of it was made for desktop pc's.
Do we need a Windows, Linux or whatever desktop on an UMPC? Do i want to do Excel sheets on such a small screen or wordprocessing? Is there a market for devices that are offering me the possibility to play World of Warcraft at 15fps?

As long as all the UMPC manufacturers are not starting thinking outside of the box, they will never ever have any chance against this world of the Iphone and Blackberry lovers.

So if you really want to get an UMPC right now...
Make sure its as small as it can get and take care of the battery life. And you might wanna take a look at some new OS platforms like midlinux or android. ;)
