OQO + HSDPA = model e2

Europeans have been clamoring for a WWAN option for their model e2 since it was launched and their prayers have been answered. This week OQO announced the availability of the ultimate in WWAN connectivity: HSDPA. And no, you don't have to sign up for some new contract the that one provider you love to hate, they've really outdone themselves by making it SIM-free and unlocked. Just pop your SIM card in and assuming you've paid your bills you can hop online anywhere you can get a wireless signal. HSDPA on the model e2 runs up to 3.2 Mbps and if you're only in range of a GPRS signal it can utilize that, albeit in a much slower, much more painful fashion.

With my recent purchase of an HSDPA modem I've come to realize the value of a strong wireless signal. Downtown Taipei has pretty good coverage, but I'm learning where the gaps in their HSDPA coverage is. One such place is my friend's new darts bar which only gets GPRS coverage. My friend was having her birthday party there and the hot topic of the night was horrific injuries as one of her surfer friends had been slashed across the face by another surfer's board. I wanted to share the photos of my motorcycle injuries with them so I pulled out my OQO and attempted to go online. After connecting with my HSDPA modem I saw the telltale GPRS notification indicating that I was connected at only 56k, ouch! After what seemed like an eternity the photos came up on the website and their reaction was priceless and I knew that the wait was worth it.
