MIU has just announced their M*Free UMPC which they're dubbing a Hybrid Dual Portable Computer (HDPC). It's a dual-booting UMPC that comes with Windows XP with an additional Windows CE install or Linux. The Linux flavor of choice is Qplus which is an embedded version of linux that seems to be popular in Korea. Under the hood they've got a VIA C7-M CPU at up to 1.0 GHz, a 30GB hard drive and a sweet seven hours of battery life. It loks like this device is ready to do everything that you'll want a UMPC to do, from GPS to VOIP as well as video conferencing. Look for this one at the beginning of the second half of this year coming in at around $500.

$500 for a device combines cell phon, GPS, UMPC, and PDA?
That's a quite tough mission, however it will be amazing if it comes true!

This machine is go great but there is a question in my mind. Why it is not HTC firstly put such machine into the market, but taken place by MIU ? Is VIA platform is qualified for HTC to use in their cell phone? I do not think so. Then reasons are?

good concept but not a good form factor. They should have made it more of a true clamshell shape a little longer so that a true touch type keyboard was provided.

no words on battery life??
as for reasons HTC not use via processor: I think via's processor is capatible in turn of performance, but not adequate in turns of low power in order to support long enough battery life. Because via's ulv processor is originally aimed at a different spectrum other than phone market...so I think both via & intel has a long way to go if wanna enter the smart phone arena!

The SPEC says: 7 hours for heavy use, 90 hours for low-power use.
This device uses Eden 500Mhz CPU, which average power consumption is lower than 1W.
Keep going, VIA! Maybe this is your last fight!

I like the dual OS but do not like the design. I would rather they made it a clamshell shape with a good touch type keyboard.

I agree technically its a great concept but the shape is just so un-user friendly. I agree a clamshell design would have made this a real winner. There have been so many terrible non functional UMPC's but great advances in the internals yet not one very useful.

Can somebody tell the OEM's that we do not want any more lame thumb computers anymore!
