I've mentioned it a few times before, but now we've got a link over there on the menu pointing out the Chinese version of UML. Now we've got an About Us section to let you know a little bit more about the people behind the site. Yep, you can read a little about me. Over on the Chinese version you can read about our two Chinese bloggers who keep China updated on what's going on in the land of UMPCs. Don't forget if you need to contact me my e-mail address is

Now I'm off for a four day holiday, it's Moon Festival time and we've got barbecue and moon cakes to eat! I've got my sore throat scheduled to be "all better" on Sunday morning leaving most of my weekend happy and carefree, let's see if the germs will cooperate. | | Click to Comment | Comments [ 0 ] |

On Monday I headed home in the rain just ahead of Typhoon Wipha and found out that Taipei residents should stay home and weather out the storm. I was thrilled that I didn't have to go in to the office, but unfortunately I got a pretty solid case of tonsillitus to accompany me through the storm. I basically slept through the entire day, although I did manage to stay awake long enough to watch a movie in bed on my OQO. Wednesday I woke up feeling worse and determined that a trip to the doctor was necessary. I haven't had very good experiences at the doctor's office here in Taipei, so I was a bit apprehensive, but as soon as they took my temperature (39.3° C) they took my illness a bit more seriously and I got out of there with the proper medication and care instructions.
After a fairly restless night I am back at the office, gave a presentation in a very quiet voice and zapped a nasty trojan off of my colleagues USB drive. She got infected via USB stick last week, reinstalled her system, and today she was about to get reinfected by a different USB drive. Word to the wise folks, don't share USB sticks. I know, you need a 30MB file from your colleague two seats away, but your safest solution is to use Skype to send that file. Skype is smart in that it knows if someone is on the same network as you and will use the fastest route to send files. So if your colleague is sitting two seats away, chances are that Skyping that file to them will actually be faster than walking over to them, putting your thumb drive in their computer, copying the file to it, and walking back to your desk. That and you won't get infected by that same virus that's been making them complain that their computer is slow. | | Click to Comment | Comments [ 0 ] |

OQO just launched a European version of their gadget-lust worthy UMPC, they're calling it the model e2. I imagine the e in e2 stands for Europe. If you look closely at the model e2's keyboard you can see they've changed some of the keys for better usability in Europe. This new version has the new VIA C7-M processor running at 1.6 GHz and also has an optional 32 GB SSD drive or the massive 120 GB hard drive that they launched last week. You'll get the same great 3 hour battery life on the standard battery, or 6 hours on the double capacity battery. I love my OQO model 02, so I'm really happy to see my European friends are able to get one now.

This video of the Samsung SPH-P9200 (AKA the butterfly UMPC) was taken at GITEX 2007, a massive electronics tradeshow in Dubai. I haven't been to that convention yet, but hopefully I can make it next year. It seems like a really hot spot for UMPCs. Take a look at this UMPC website from Dubai to see what I mean. They've following UMPCs as close as anyone else.
Original video from: Khurram Farooq.
After the jump, and older video of the same UMPC, you can watch it booting up Windows XP. The cool thing about this UMPC is that it comes with a bluetooth handset and 3G wireless. I hope it will get released soon. | | Click to Comment | Comments [ 3 ] |

Ok, maybe not for all of us, but this girl is using her UMPC to make herself better looking. In this picture you can see her touching up her lip gloss through the built-in webcam on her UMPC. The more people use UMPCs in their daily lives, the more they find new uses for them. I can't wait to see more creative ways to use UMPCs. | | Click to Comment | Comments [ 5 ] |
