UMPCs create e-portfolio for children
Written by Bjorn Stromberg

Dughall McCormick appears to be involved in early years education in the UK. In an effort to reduce his reliance on paper, post-it notes, and other tools he has switched to using a UMPC to help him compile e-portfolios for the children to share with their parents. Mr. McCormick has hopes that the utility of the UMPC will help him to reduce the distractions that the traditional forms of documentation have caused to him. He is calling this UMPC project Free the Teacher and has put together a fascinating blog documenting his experiment into mobility.

Mr. McCormick has selected the PaceBlade P8 as his weapon of choice, primarily for the front facing webcam that he will use to take photos and video of the kids. From a quick reading through his blog, Mr McCormick presented in front of a crowd of 160 early years experts and even convinced a few of them to try out his great UMPC experiment.

I will be watching the Free the Teacher closely to see how his experiment turns out. I'd love to see what a sample e-portfolio looks like.

OQO turning heads across the US
Written by Bjorn Stromberg

Al Iverson typed out a quick update on how he's been enjoying his OQO. He seems to be turning a lot of heads at the conference he went to:

Overall, I'm still happy, and today has been a really good day. At the conference, a lot of people have stopped to ask me about the OQO. Everybody assumes it's some sort of PDA at first -- nobody realizes it's a full Windows XP laptop in disguise.

He seems to be having a little trouble with his EVDO connection, but otherwise is quite pleased with the OQO, especially its battery life. I need to get an external battery charger so I can leave one battery charging while my other is out getting drained. Speaking of batteries, I need to go out and get another battery and external charger for my cell phone as well.

Kevin Tofel has figured out how to slay that cursed ghost mouse that haunts your pointer in Windows Vista. He's even put together a great video to show how you too can exorcise the demon mouse that torments your pointer in Vista. The secret to controlling this spirit mouse is found in the Mobile PC control panel under Pen & Input Devices. Thanks for the tip Kevin!

Microsoft Reader optimized for Origami

The lights over at Origami Project website have flickered on briefly as Christine from the Microsoft Reader team makes a guest appearance on the site. Christine is announcing a new version of Microsoft Reader that has been specially tuned for Origami devices. This new version is called Microsoft Reader Optimized for Origami™ and features a few new features that weren't available on the version that shipped with Vista, primarily support for Windows XP Tablet PC Edition.

Does anyone have any free books they can recommend? I really want to try out this reader, but I don't have any eBooks to read. In the meantime, I'll try heading over to Project Gutenberg and see if anything catches my eye.

VIDEO - WoW on the iPhone
Written by Bjorn Stromberg
Wednesday, 11 July 2007

We saw the video of John Gatt playing WoW on the OQO, now check out this video of a guy playing WoW on his iPhone.

Of course, the iPhone can't actually run World of Warcraft, he doesn't even move his character around. While it is certainly incredible that it's even possible to use a phone to interact with a computer running WoW, I think it does show the limitations of the ARM platform. People do want to be able to run all their favorite applications on their mobile device and that's what x86 is going to deliver in the next few years. It's going to be far easier for CPU manufacturers to follow VIA's lead in shrinking package sizes and power consumption than it will be for the entire x86 development community to turn around and start developing for ARM based devices.
