I woke up this morning to find an e-mail in my inbox containing pictures of something promising to shrink the size of my UMPC. Fortunately, I didn't have to dredge the e-mail out of the spam trap, because it was talking about the world's smallest x86 platform, the VIA Mobile-ITX.
Take a look at the big chip with the VIA logo in the middle, that's the VIA VX700 chipset, a combined northbridge and southbridge which handles all the memory, graphics, & storage. The little black chip to the right of that that says C7-S is actually a miniaturized version of the same C7-M found in popular UMPCs like the OQO model 02 or the Samsung Q1B. The one in this photo is a 1.0GHz chip with a 400MHz front side bus.
I won't pretend to know how VIA's engineers have managed to shrink their current UMPC platform so much, all I can do is marvel at the feat. Looking at this tiny motherboard I can just imagine all the tiny little UMPCs we'll be seeing at this time next year.
Take a look at a few more pictures after the jump and then check out the Mobile-ITX Gallery. | | Click to Comment | Comments [ 0 ] |

This video introduces VIA's newest motherboard for ultra mobile devices, the Mobile ITX. It's maximum power drain is only 3.5 watts and at idle it sips only 0.25 watts. VIA has taken their miniaturization to a whole new level here, the integrated northbridge and southbridge are the big chip measuring 21x21mm while the C7-M is barely noticeable at just 9x11mm. This motherboard is expected to be in mobile phone size devices as soon as next year. | | Click to Comment | Comments [ 2 ] |

Hugo has gotten back on the OQO model 02 bandwagon and after some tough grilling by Frank Garcia (ctitanic) he has posted a video blog laying out the reasons why he chose to use the OQO model 02 as his primary device.
Hugo has posted a download link to the video on his site and part two & three can be watched after the jump. | | Click to Comment | Comments [ 0 ] |

I've put up a gallery of hi-res images of the VIA NanoBook Ultra Mobile Device Reference Design, I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the NanoBook machine and shooting some videos with it. My favorite part about the device is the MobilityPLUS modules. They are USB based so any existing USB device that can fit into that form factor can be converted into a MobilityPLUS module relatively easily: GPS, VOIP handset, DVB Tuner, 3G internet module, webcam, etc. | | Click to Comment | Comments [ 6 ] |

Computex 2007 started just a few hours ago and I'm about to head down to put my time in on the show floor. I'll be at the VIA booth all afternoon today and oddly enough I won't be at VTF during the keynotes tomorrow morning as I'm scheduled to be at the VIA booth. I know it doesn't make any sense, but that's the way we roll. I will be attending the Ultra Mobility Tech track during VTF 2007 so if anyone is planning on being there, make sure you say hi! Finally, I'll also be at the VIA booth on Friday afternoon to talk about UMPCs.
VIA has got some major announcements planned for VTF and I think it's going to be a big step forward for UMPCs. I can't say anything more about it until after VTF, all I can say is that it's an exciting time for the UMPC space and the future of Ultra Mobility looks bright. | | Click to Comment | Comments [ 1 ] |
