Let me introduce you to the $300 UMPC, the Gecko from Norhtec. This little 7" clamshell design packs a 1.0 GHz VIA C7-M CPU, a 40GB hard drive and up to 1GB of DDR2 RAM. It's been designed by the same folks who won the OLPC contract, Quanta, and is ear-marked to be used in the developing world. The Gecko runs Linpus Lite which is based on Xorg and in my mind resembles the version of Linux on the eeePC with tabs titled: Internet, Work, Learn, Play and Settings.
This photo is from a preview of the Gecko by staff at Norhtec's Nigerian office. Nigeria has been identified by Norhtec as an area for major development and they think that the $300 Gecko is just the UMPC for the job. With its great battery life and low cost it's going to let Nigerians get online and get productive now. | | Click to Comment | Comments [ 10 ] |

Youtube user naorion has uploaded two videos onto YouTube showing his CloudBook UMPC running Warcraft 3 and Quake 3. It looks like both games ran quite well on the CloudBook with a decent framerate. The native resolution on the CloudBook isn't perfect for these games, but with a little bit of stretching they are fine. Have a look at the videos and see for yourself, this little UMPC handles WC3 and Q3 with ease.

Some of you may remember I Crayon Physics a while back. This is a new physics sandbox called Phun that let's you experiment with physics in a playful environment. You draw the environment, tweak the physical properties, and then watch the results in real time. Phun includes motors and liquids as well as hinges and friction controls. Just like Crayon Physics, this is a great application for pen and finger inputs. Download a beta of this and give it a run on your UMPC at let us know what you think. | | Click to Comment | Comments [ 0 ] |

While a bunch of you are out drooling over the UMPCs being uncovered at CeBIT, my colleague was here at the office oohing and aahing over this beautiful little machine from Samsung. This is the Samsung Anycall SPH-P9200, also known as the Deluxe MITs, an entirely new form factor that solves a lot of the dilemmas that UMPCs are facing. It's got a full size keyboard folds in half and also acts as a touchpad. Additionally, this little beauty comes with WiBRO, HSDPA and Wifi built-in for a wide range of connectivity.
It's got a sweet 1024x600 touchscreen and it also does double duty as a phone, which let's it run under the Samsung Anycall brand. We've been seeing this device floating around at tradeshows, but I believe the UMPC in this video is a full production model and that it's beginning to find it's way into consumers' hands in Korea as we speak. Check out the video for all the juicy deets. | | Click to Comment | Comments [ 9 ] |

Chippy spotted a poster of this interesting UMPC, the Gigabyte M700, before the show started and snapped a pic. Gigabyte's press release indicates it has a 7" screen weighs 650 grams and comes equipped with an ExpressCard for 3.5G or Wimax connectivity. Key additions for the M700 are it's dual webcams and integrated GPS.
I'm really impressed that they have trimmed the weight down to 650 grams, that's super light for a 7" device. It seems a lot of people had been expressing displeasure that there weren't any new slate designs coming out for UMPCs, this one should put a smile on their faces. | | Click to Comment | Comments [ 8 ] |
