Since I had my chart making program open I decided to chart out the power consumption numbers that Chippy just posted on UMPCPortal. I find it's easier to understand numbers when I visualize them. From a pure performance vs power consumption standpoint, it's hard to justify the massive battery life hit you will take on the Samsung Q1P when both systems are able to perform their tasks well.
As Chippy noted, the main focus for VTF 2007 is Ultra Mobility and we're expecting to see some new things from VIA there. The date when VIA will reveal their updates to the VIA Ultra Mobility Platform, June 6th, is only two weeks away. I'm expecting a great show. | | Click to Comment | Comments [ 6 ] |

About two weeks ago, Kevin Tofel posted some battery life numbers for the Samsung Q1B which revealed that the VIA C7-M CPU was responsible for the excellent battery life of the device. Linda Epstein, a tablet PC guru, has come back with some more numbers for the battery life of the Samsung Q1B and they paint a very nice picture for those of us who want to get the most out of our UMPCs.
Battery Life: an amazing 4 hours and 16 minutes in always on mode, wireless on, no standby, no hibernate and the screen and hard drive on. Which is close to double the battery life of the Q1.
While Linda's testing methodology is different from Kevin's we can clearly see the advantages the VIA processor has. Linda's numbers will more accurately reflect real-life usage as Kevin's test maxed out CPU usage. Overall you'll see 50-100% increase in battery life from the VIA CPU over the Intel CPU, pretty incredible news for UMPCs. | | Click to Comment | Comments [ 13 ] |

Neil Balthaser got a new UMPC in the mail on Saturday, May 19th. He's had 3 days with his new OQO model 02 now and seems to be as happy as a dog with two tails about it. Just look at what he wrote:
I have had my OQO since Saturday, about 3 days and will post a full review shortly. However, I wanted to let folks know that I am very happy with the OQO. It has delivered on its promise and met or exceeded all my expectations. It has been acting as my full-time desktop replacement (having replaced now my Samsung Q1p) for the last 3 days. I have no complaints.
I'm really looking forward to his in-depth review, mostly I'm curious about how he works. I hope that he'll give us a little video demonstration of how he uses his OQO model 02 to get his work done. | | Click to Comment | Comments [ 2 ] |

UMPCs aren't just for gaming and checking your e-mail, you can also use them for math! Okay, maybe math isn't the most exciting thing in the world, but UMPCs could prove to be an excellent learning tool in the math classroom. Clean precise equations, instant feedback, simplified grading, what's not to like? | | Click to Comment | Comments [ 0 ] |

It’s what UMPCs promised to be when the Origami project was first unveiled.
That's what England's T3 magazine said about the Medion UMPC. Not much of an in-depth review, but a decent at-a-glance look at the device.
