VIDEO - Avalanche of OQO reviews

It looks like the OQO model 02s are really flying off the shelves. Almost every day we see a new video posted online of excited users unboxing their OQOs and sharing their experience with the world. Today I'd like to point out some nice videos shot by the VIA Arena team, John & Fiona Gatt down in Australia, as well as a great video shot by David Ciccone over on Mobility Today.

David's video is interesting because it's possibly the first video of the OQO model 02 to come shipped with Vista.

World of Warcraft Credit Card?

That's right, get a World of Warcraft credit card and you can earn rewards for all that money you are spending. Right now it only looks like you can earn game time, but I can imagine coming up with other rewards as well. Maybe if you spend $20,000 on your credit card in the future you can get a fancy horse!

Samsung Q1B - More Battery Life
Written by Bjorn Stromberg
Thursday, 10 May 2007

Kevin Tofel has posted up an analysis of the Samsung Q1B's battery life. Battery Mark score? 179 minutes. Yes, that's three hours minimum of continuous use on the standard 3-cell battery. Drop in an extended battery and that's a minimum of six hours. And if you're not constantly draining the battery you'll get about 4 hours of battery life on the standard battery. Here's a quote:

With the recent Samsung Q1U & Intel A1xx CPU announcements it's easy to overlook the current VIA-based UMPCs, but I think there's a little overdue credit that should be extended to Via. It's clear that Intel's new mobile chips are aimed squarely at the VIA C7-M; by providing an energy efficient CPU, VIA has helped pull Intel into the market which provides consumers more choice. Would Intel have done so anyway? I think they would have, but we might have waited longer.

Medion UMPC Review
Written by Bjorn Stromberg
Thursday, 10 May 2007

Hot on the heels of his AMtek T770 review, Steve Paine has posted a review of the Medion UMPC. Here's a quote from the review:

Firstly, and very importantly, VIA appear to have done a good job with the new VX700 / UniChrome video drivers. Windows Media player and Origami experience worked well. The best we've seen on a 'Vista on VIA' device yet. This bodes well for the OQO and T770 and I guess all future VIA devices. Media Center was about the only thing that didn't perform and to be honest, I'm not surprised. Media Center is a real heavyweight program. After installing a few drivers, Xvid at 2mbps was perfect through the Windows Media Player - more than enough quality for the 6.5" screen.

It's interesting that Intel is talking so big about improving efficiency but there just aren't many intel-based devices out there. Looking at Steve's recent coverage, we can see not one or two, but three different VIA-based design wins that all run Vista and range from economical PC to drool-worthy vanity PC. It's clear that VIA isn't just talking big about UMPCs, they're continuously coming out with power efficient UMPCs and working hard to get the platform right.
