All I want for Christmas is UMPC

After Otto has gotten us all excited about the next generation of UMPCs, Chippy over at Carrypad has an excellent rundown of what we can expect for the holiday season.

Over the last few quiet months in the UMPC world, we've been hearing about new products that are going to be launched and it looks like these are all aiming for the Christmas sales period. In the far-east, work will be starting right now on production lines in preparation for production runs in August. Here's an update on the long-awaited devices.

Take a look at which UMPCs Chippy expects to see for the holidays.

And even if you've already got a UMPC, maybe santa will pick up an an extended battery for you and put it in your stocking. Of course, you don't have to wait until Christmas to get one of those.

Personally I'm really looking forward to the DualCor cPC, it's really a big step in the right direction. I got to play with one briefly at Computex and I was impressed.

Otto Berkes on the VIA VX700 and the Future of UMPCs

At this year's VIA Technology Forum a few exciting details were revealed about how UMPCs are going to improve in the near future. Microsoft's Mobile Platform Division Manager, Otto Berkes, gave us a brief history of the Origami project and then goes on to show us what the VIA VX700 will allow in terms of size reduction. It's really inspiring to see such a radical advance in form factor in such a short period of time. The VIA VX700 is about half the size of the VIA VN800 board found in the TabletKiosk eo.

Friday Tasty Morsels

I can't figure it out, why are all the delicious tidbits of news released on Friday just in time for me to go home?

Number one on the list is Microsoft's iPod killer. No, it's not the UMPC, it's some other mystery device. And no, no one has any idea what it's going to look like, but the ideas are intriguing. Get this:

To attract current iPod users Microsoft is going to let you download for free any songs you've already bought from the iTunes Music Store. They'll actually scan iTunes for purchased tracks and then automatically add those to your account.

Is that crazy or what?

Okay number two is New Apple iPod Designs. Not all of the devices represented will make it to market, in fact most of them are probably fakes. As for which is real, personally, I've got my money on the "none touch" iPod with the smooth face and no buttons.

Number three is good news for me and my UMPC here in Taipei. It's plans in Taipei for a wi-fi phone service that would work very well with my wifi enabled UMPC. I wonder what the rates are going to be like.

VIA VX700

Big news today from VIA. They announced a new chipset, the VIA VX700 which combines the northbridge and southbridge into one chip. This is huge news for UMPC manufacturers because it allows them to design smaller, more efficient, and cooler UMPCs!

VIA VX700

We're talking a footprint reduction of 40%! Not only that, but combining the two chips allows for more efficient operation for longer battery life. This new chipset is quite an advance over the chipset found in the TabletKiosk eo (VIA VN800).

Along with this new chipset is a new entry in the UMPC category from DualCor. Called the cPC, it features the new VIA VX700 chipset and a VIA C7-M ULV processor running at 1.5 GHz.

To Go!

I just saw this great illustration over on The Carrypad UMPC Journal and it's exactly how I see UMPCs being used in the near future. All we're really waiting on is the manufacturers to catch up. TabletKiosk will have their docking station available soon.
