VIDEO - Glenn Henry talks about Isaiah

This is really exciting news about VIA's new processor architecture, code-named Isaiah. In this interview with lead CPU designer from Centaur (VIA's CPU Design Company), Glenn Henry talks about the incredible engineering feat that they have accomplished with their 40-man engineering design team in Austin, TX. Here Glenn lays out how they have analyzed the C7 CPU found in lots of popular UMPCs today, like the OQO model 02, the Everex CloudBook, and the Samsung Q1B, and they've created a brand new CPU that is drop in compatible, uses the same amount of power, and gets between two and four the performance. Have a look at the interview, I think Glenn explains this very well.

Oh yeah, and make sure to check out the VIA Isaiah Architecture gallery for some photos from the interview.

VIDEO - Pro photographers using OQO

I was just reading this article about the wireless coverage planned for the stadium hosting Super Bowl XLII and I noticed that Reuters photographers have been hooked up with OQO model 02s to capture their footage live. Digging a bit deeper I ran into this interesting footage from CES of a European Press Photo Agency photographer editing his photos live on an OQO. It sounds like the editors can login to the photographers' UMPCs and download photos live. No more waiting for the event to finish for news agencies to get high quality photos. This is a real game changer for serious news-gathering organizations. Equipping your photographers with WWAN enabled UMPCs is really going to help you get the scoop on your competitors.

VIDEO - Cloud computing with the CloudBook

Last week I mentioned gOS a few times and now we've got this video interview with David Liu from gOS. He talks a bit about the creation of gOS and the direction that gOS is taking. The interview ends with a great quote:

We want to see people begin to use online applications as an alternative to traditional software on the desktop.

gOS is a version of Ubuntu with the Enlightenment windows manager with a focus on online applications, primarily Google Apps like Google Docs and GMail. It is the operating system found on low-cost UMPCs, notebooks, and desktop PCs from Everex that are sold at Wal-Mart. The CloudBook which is going to be in stores this weekend runs gOS and comes in at only $399.

CTitanic has gotten the Wibrain B1 and in this video he gives us a quick introduction in Spanish. He says that although the Wibrain B1 UMPC is not very attractive, once you handle it for a little bit you will find that it's very functional and you don't mind how it looks quite so much. He also says that the build quality is very good, at the same level as the OQO model 02 which has been regarded as a very high quality device. Additionally, he says that the performance is similar to the AMtek T770, which he found to be adequate, somewhere between the Everun and the OQO. Have a watch and see what a UMPC Expert has to say about the Wibrain B1.

VIDEO - More OQO at CES

I thought OQO's 32 GB SSD drive but then I watched this video and realized that they added a huge 64 GB SSD. That's enormous! I'm thinking about sending my model 02 back and switching to that big, beefy SSD. It'll extend the battery life and speed up my UMPC all in one single blow. If you are going to get an OQO model 02 let me recommend going with the SSD drive, you will not regret it. The other awesome thing that OQO is doing is getting WiMAX running on their model 02s, that's really going to shake things up. I can't wait to see what more they can cram into that little tiny device.
